Stephanie Gilmore - please put your clothes back on

Steph Gilmore doing what she does best - charging!
I'm a bit late off the mark, but there has been much furore (and some fantastic insights) the past couple of weeks over the Roxy clip featuring Steph Gilmore promoting the Women's World Tour Championship of Surfing.

The premise of the video was for the viewer to guess who the surfer was by completely sexualising her body - slow pans up her body as she wakes up in crisp white sheets and stands in only her knickers with her back to the viewer, looking out a window. More slow pans as she dresses and eventually she paddles out... but we see not only not her face but no surfing either.

But hang on, it's Stephanie Gilmore.

FIVE-TIME WORLD CHAMPION.

Last time I checked Roxy was a brand marketed at women. Do we want to watch faceless women rolling around in bed in their knickers? Nope.

Roxy... wtf??

I could rave on about the continual objectification of women in surfing (and yes, I'm looking at you Ms Enabler a.k.a Alana Blanchard), but it's an old argument.

What flummoxes me is that it is clear is the sheer number of girls and women surfing is rapidly growing.

Hell, even fashion brands like Stella McCartney and J.Crew are jumping on the bandwagon and have released capsule surf wear collections for this summer.

So, expect to see a whole lot ladies out there catching waves.

And Stephanie, please lead the charge and surf your arse off - and not just show us your arse.
